World Refugee Day, created in 2000 by
the United Nations , was first celebrated in 2001. World Refugee
Day celebrates the lives and contributions of refugees around
the world. This UN initiative uses art and performance to
deliver positive educational messages to counter fear and
ignorance and raise awareness of the plights of refugees
worldwide.
The Idaho Office for Refugees, in
partnership with the International Rescue Committee, World
Relief, Agency for New Americans and the English Language
Center, is hosting a day of activities to celebrate our local
refugee community and raise awareness of the international
struggle for safety and freedom. Other proud sponsors of World
Refugee Day include Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center,
Boise School District, Northstar Cycle Courier, and the City of
Boise.
Refugees contribute to the growing
international culture of our community, and World Refugee Day
provides an opportunity for the Boise community to come together
with newcomers to celebrate their contributions to our society
and across the globe.
Activities will include international
dance performers, poets, singers, musicians as well as refugees
who will sell personal henna work, sell handmade jewelry, hand
woven baskets, crocheted items, blankets, and many other items
as well.
